Kiefernstrasse

Kiefernstrasse (german for pine road) is the most colorful street in Duesseldorf. The houses have been painted by international artists and new paintings are constantly being added. In the 1980s there were street battles between squatters and the police, now there are orderly tenancies. The community of predominantly politically leftist people of many nationalities organizes joint street festivals and helps each other. If you want to move in here, you have to apply for some apartments - not at the landlords, but the community. The neighbors want you to fit in their society. For a long time Kiefernstrasse was an insider tip, meanwhile tourists find here more often and use the paintings as backgrounds for their photos. As long as this does not take over and the visitors do not photograph disrespectfully in the apartments, they are welcome. If you ask nice, you will sometimes even be invited to come in for a coffee.
